New Chair and Trustees welcomed to The Road Safety Trust Board

The Road Safety Trust, dedicated to achieving zero deaths and serious injuries on UK roads, has welcomed a new Chair and three new Trustees onto its board.

As a grant-giving charity, The Road Safety Trust is governed by a Board of volunteer Trustees. Trustees have a range of backgrounds including road safety, accountancy, civil service, higher education, politics, and crime reduction. The role of the Board of Trustees is to ensure that The Road Safety Trust meets its charitable purpose through grant-giving of making UK roads safer for all users.

Tony Fuller, The Road Safety Trust’s Vice Chair since October 2018, has taken over as Chair of the Board of Trustees, and Sonya Hurt, a Trustee since January 2020, has become Vice Chair.

The members of The Road Safety Trust are the participating UK Police forces in the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme (NDORS) and are represented by Jo Shiner. Jo is Chief Constable of Sussex Police, its first female Chief Constable. She has joined The Road Safety Trust Board in her capacity as National Police Chief’s Council (NPCC) Lead for Roads Policing and replaces Anthony Bangham who retired from the Trust Board in July.

Philip Seccombe, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Warwickshire has been appointed as a representative for the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners (APCC). He replaces David Jamieson, previous PCC for West Midlands, who retired from the Trust Board in June 2020.

Marlena Stefańska, a Certified Chartered Accountant who holds a Masters degree in Finance and is finishing a Masters degree in Behavioural Economics was recruited as a Trustee through an open process to replace Gary Walker who stepped down in March 2021 as a Trustee and member of the Audit & Risk Committee after six years.

Trustees are required to retire every three years and may offer themselves for reappointment for a further period of three years. This has resulted in three long-standing Trustees who have been with the Trust since it was established in 2014, Ashton West OBE (Chair since July 2018), Oliver Carsten and Kate McMahon also stepping down after two completed terms of office.

Sally Lines, Chief Executive of The Road Safety Trust said:

“We welcome, Phillip, Jo and Marlena as new Trustees and look forward to the expertise that they will be able to bring to the future of the Trust.

“Ashton, Anthony, Kate and Oliver have shared a wealth of knowledge and insight into shaping the Trust and supporting its first 5 years of grant-giving and 25 completed projects.

“As a relatively new grant-giving charity, these first 5 years have been formative. The period has given us the opportunity to learn about how best to attract high quality applications, assess and award the grants, manage, and support each project as a partner and capture the progress and difference made. We are grateful to all our Trustees for their commitment of time, energy and knowledge-sharing on a voluntary basis which has helped us to make a real difference in road safety.”
