Project summary
Cognitive changes, such as spatial orientation, in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)/dementia can affect an individual's fitness to drive and increase the risk of road traffic incidents.
However, there remains very poor knowledge and inadequate ways to screen for and identify changes.
This project, carried out in partnership with Driving Mobility, aims to develop a feasible and reliable online battery of cognitive tests for people with MCI/dementia to determine their fitness to drive and incident/collision risks.
It will determine whether specifically designed cognitive tests for driving are feasible to use in MCI/dementia, validating findings against existing cognitive tests and on road assessments.
The project will then assess the ability of these novel cognitive tests to determine which specific cognitive deficits and their level of impairment are associated in MCI and dementia with a reduced fitness to drive and road traffic incident risk.
