Christmas campaign to target drivers who drink or take drugs
The National Police Chiefs’ Council has announced officers will be out in force across the UK to ensure road users and the wider community are kept safe from harm this festive season right through Christmas until the New Year. With increased policing to target those who choose to drink or take drugs and drive during the Christmas period.
Sally Lines, CEO of the Road Safety Trust said:
“Any campaign that helps make our roads safer has the Trust’s support. It is dangerous to drink and/or consume drugs before driving so we urge people not to do this at all before getting into the driving seat. The Department for Transport estimates that there were 290 fatalities in 2017 where a driver/rider was over the drink drive limit for Great Britain. There are no official statistics for drug driving but Police Forces across the UK have increased the number of saliva-based drug tests and PACTS confirms the use of drugs as a contributory factor to collisions.
“Every driver is different and even a small amount of alcohol or drugs can affect the speed of your reactions and compromise your ability to drive. To stay safe, it is best to totally avoid alcohol or drugs if you are driving.”
